Located 35 miles east-northeast of here are the La Sal
Mountains, near the Colorado border. The highest peak is Mt.
Peale, elevation 12,721 feet. Just in case you're wondering,
the La Sals ARE southeast of Dead Horse and Moab. We have come
southwest into Canyonlands, hence the direction change of the La
Sals. Down in the canyon bottom you can see the White Rim.
It is white sandstone, about 1,000 feet below us here. Just past
that grayish flat is the Colorado River. It has cut so deep that
it can't be seen from here. It flows from left to right where it
joins the Green River. Before 1921 the portion of the Colorado
above the Green was known as the "Grand River" - hence the name "Grand
View Point".
